Devastating wildfires, floodings, … Evermore events demonstrate clearly that climate change already has and will have a continued adverse impact upon the planet and human activities. There is some worldwide momentum (also thanks to COP26) to reflect upon and change our behaviour as societies and individuals. Climate change also poses an ever bigger threat to CISV and at the same time CISV – by the nature of its programmes – is contributing to that overall negative impact.
The “Decarbonizing CISV” Working Group is working on tools, methods and proposals to balance CISV’s nature of activities with a decrease of our carbon footprint. Detailed information on the deliverables of this working group can be browsed on this page.
Decarbonizing CISV Maturity Model
The Decarbonizing CISV Working Group has designed a brand new self-assessment tool for CISV: The Decarbonizing CISV Maturity Model aims to provide a guiding stream for everyone organizing a CISV activity seeking to make their activities carbon neutral, complying to CISV's values and mission.
What is a maturity model? Generally speaking, maturity models help evaluate the level of progression when pursuing an objective. According to the actions taken, the result sets the organization into a specific level of maturity. By working on the objectives overtime one is able to improve performance in the matter and reach a better level. It is a tool designed to inspire positive actions and to pursue improvements.
The Decarbonizing CISV Maturity Model looks at four main categories of action that CISV Chapters and NAs work on: awareness, mobility, food and activities. For each category there is a list of actions that can reasonably be taken. As local realities and contexts differ, our maturity model provides space for adaptation and creativity. Chapters and NAs can take other actions than the ones listed in the model.
We are very excited for the organization to now use this tool. It comes to you as a simple (albeit: long) online questionaire to be filled. The calculated result and maturity level will be sent to the eMail address given in the questionaire!

Decarbonizing Best Practices
Climate change is no longer just a natural phenomenon but is increasingly seen as a global humanitarian crisis. The United Nations states that this current climate crisis threatens world peace. This is how fighting climate change becomes tightly connected to CISV’s mission.
As an international peace education organisation CISV must improve its organisational practices and aims to become carbon neutral. This is needed in order to remain both credible and relevant. In line with this vision, the ambition of the Decarbonizing CISV Working Group is to support and motivate CISV as an organizaiton on all levels to help reduce their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment.
This "Decarbonizing Best Practice" report celebrates what CISVers worldwide are doing to tackle this global problem. The goal is to spark inspiration, such that it becomes easy to copy initiatives or build upon what others have done. This in turn will lead us, as an organisation and as a society, to progress playfully to a more sustainable and stable world.
