Project Description

This IPP will explore what homelessness looks like. Participants will work with a partner organization to help construct an affordable house. Participants will learn about strategies and actions that, through community collaboration, can lead to an end to chronic and episodic homelessness.

Habitat for Humanity Fredericton Area mobilizes volunteers and community partners to build affordable housing and promote home-ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. Using donations of money, materials and labour, they aim to make a difference – one house, one family and one volunteer at a time.

Community Action Group on Homelessness (CAGH) is a joint initiative of over 30 non-profit organizations, government representatives and community leaders. They work to strengthen the community capacity to end homelessness via collective planning, collaboration, and community engagement.

Participants will listen to professionals working in the area, as well as those with direct experience of living homeless. They will discover how the ‘housing first’ strategy can help address related issues ie addictions, budgeting, mental illness, poor health. Participants will learn about resources available such as emergency shelters, community kitchens and outreach services. IPP participants will learn from each other enriching their knowledge & perspective about homelessness & housing stability by providing a global view.

Participant Profile

Participants should ideally:

• have an interest in the topic of homelessness and a desire to work with the theme in your own community
• be open-minded and non-judgmental
• be good communicators
• be open to interacting with people of different socio-economic backgrounds
• be willing to do manual work on a build site - no skills needed but experience or skills in home construction/renovating may be an asset

Zoom up : Photography, empowerment and Down Syndrome

Project Description

While working with "Galera do Click", this IPP will see that art can be a powerful tool for inclusion and empowerment . Participants will learn about the art of photography, sharing this experience with people with Down Syndrome. The participants will have the opportunity to see the world through their lenses, sensibility and understand their unlimited capacity. Together, they will capture moments, people and things around São Paulo to create an exhibition of work.

The partner organization, “Galera do Click", teaches people with Down Syndrome and other disabilities to work professionally with a camera. With the motto "What is special deserves to be photographed", they give this opportunity to a group who may not otherwise receive it, whilst also empowering the individuals and challenging prejudice.

Listen and learn : Understanding barriers to integration

This IPP will look at look at the experience of integration and help participants to develop an understanding of their role within national and international integration issues. Participants will listen to the experiences of individuals experiencing barriers to integration in Danish society. They will reflect on the different approaches to integration used globally, then together with the affected communities, develop tools that aim improve their situation.

More than words : creating inclusive communities

Project Description

This IPP will look at how to make a world that everyone is more at ease living in. With the help of local artists, participants in this IPP will help reorganize and create art installations in the park annexed to the partner organization premises, regenerating it for use by a diverse local community. The regenerated park will be accessible for both local residents and the users of the partner organization’s services, providing a public space that is inclusive and promotes integration.

The partner organization, Consorzio Isontino Servizi Integrati (CISI), is the local authority in charge of day care and assistance to people with disabilities, youth and adults. They work for the integration of mentally and physically diverse people, focusing on the quality of their life and on the accessibility for them not only at the institutional premises but also in their homes, acting through various practical activities including arts and sports.

Inclusiveness is a concept applying to people’s lives both at home and at the institution – and an inclusive world is easier to live in for everyone. By taking part in art activities – as well as maintenance - and getting in touch with adults with mental disabilities, their carer’s and health staff, participants and their partners will build on their understanding of disability needs and rights. Participants will reflect on their own personal connection to disability, and share with the partner and each other, the different approaches to disability and integration from their own countries and cultures.

Participant Profile

Participants should ideally:

• have facilitation skills
• be interested in learning about inclusiveness and accessibility.
• be ready to work in team with disabled people and with their day-carers.
• be creative, with interest in the arts and also ready to play sports as a means for mutual understanding.
• be willing to communicate with more than words (English competence within the community is not guaranteed. A little Italian would be an asset)
• previous work or volunteering experience with disability would be beneficial.

Saving species – Reforestation projects, peri-urban farming and the benefits of a sustainable community.

Where and When

Costa Rica. 25 July to 8 August 2018.

Project Description

Costa Rica has a wide variety of habitats and is home to over 5% of the world’s biodiversity, including some species that can only be found in Costa Rica. Whilst staying in the heart of the tropical rainforest, participants will explore ways that communities can develop in a sustainable way. In this 2 part project, participants will learn about the reforestation of endemic species, along with an approach to non-traditional farming.

This IPP will partner with EARTH University, whose innovative educational approach has been preparing young people to contribute to the sustainable development of their home communities while constructing a prosperous and just global society.

In the university’s experimental peri-urban farm participants will work with organized community leaders, teachers and youths from rural areas, to help create the green houses, and assist with the identification and plantation of the proper crops according to soils and weather conditions. .

This IPP will also work with a reforestation of endemic species project, which will provide ecological and socio-economic benefits for the local communities in the Reventazón and Jiménez Rivers area.

Participant Profile

Participants should ideally:

• Be willing and have good health for both gardening, plantation and farming work in general.
• Be able and willing to flexible diets as people from the communities will fix most of our food based on rice, beans, salad and a source of animal protein that could include either chicken, beef or pork.
• Some basic Spanish would be preferable but not mandatory.
• Be willing to work in a location with limited facilities – internet, electricity etc.

Taboo talk : Discussing sexual health, stigma and discrimination

With a focus on discrimination and sexual health education, participants in this IPP will work to counteract stigma and prejudice experienced by people living with HIV. Together with the partner organizations, they will plan an event to raise awareness and challenge attitudes. PG Väst is an organisation providing support and resources for anyone who is affected in some way by HIV. Everything they do is based on the perspective and guidance of HIV positive people. Gothenburg’s Human Rights Center (GRC) is an anti-discrimination agency, offering legal counselling and education about human rights and discrimination.

Analli cultural lighthouse : Making a traditional community sustainable

Where and When

Egypt. 28 December 2018 to 18 January to 2019.

Project Description

In 2016, an IPP helped build Analli Cultural Center for the island of Heisa, providing a place for community members to increase their skills, and develop and protect their culture. This IPP will continue that work.

Participants will explore ways for the islanders to better market their crafts and connect them to wider market, allowing them to generate income and stay economically sustainable. They will investigate where the development of partnerships with like-minded organizations may help the Centre to expand its reach and services.

In order to make the best use of the current resources available in the island, there will also be a focus on waste reuse and upcycling, including composting organic waste, learning about sustainable agriculture and implementing permaculture systems.

Analli Cultural Center aims to tackle culture and community development from a traditional standpoint; continuing to grow the skills and expertise of the Heisa islanders and to be able to promote them to a wider audience. In the Kenzi Nubian language, Analli means 'to see’ or to be ‘enlightened’, encompasses the spirit that drives this cultural lighthouse.

Whilst working to ensure the project remains sustainable, participants in this IPP will learn how the community balances between tradition and modernity.

• A background in business development and marketing would be of value.

Let's go for sports : A tool for personal development and community living

Where and When

India. 28 December 2018 to 18 January to 2019.

Project Description

This IPP will explore how sports can be used as a tool for both individual and group development.

In India, sport is not valued as much as many other countries. However, it has huge potential to improve health, well-being and both personal and community development.

Participants will help build or renovate a sport infrastructure for the use of an underprivileged community, whilst learning about the challenges faced in accessing sports facilities and quality educational programs. The participants will also lead activities, games and sports sessions with children from the partner school. They will share practices and educational materials with local teachers, as well as discover Indian sports among the children.

The IPP will work with Nehru Education Society (NES). It is an educational institution teaching 300 children from Grades 7-12th. Do not have any sports development due to lack of equipment and teaching skills.

CISV's approach to building global friendship and living together will be used to highlight the opportunity for sports and games to contribute to social inclusion.

Overcoming boundaries : understanding identity, breaking prejudices and community building

Where and When

Myanmar. 22 December 2018 to 4 January to 2019.

Project Description

In this IPP will learn about the different cultures and conflicts existing within Myanmar, a country with over 135 ethnic groups, and reflect on how differences and conflicts can be overcome.

Organizing a camp for children from different ethnic backgrounds, participants will establish a camp in which the differences are less important than the bonds everyone can make with each other. Participants will also visit a local orphanage that has many different ethnic groups’ orphans, from different backgrounds and speaking different languages. Communication problems between the children can make it difficult to establish trusting relationships. Participants and children from the camp will plan activities to help build trust.p>

The Khayay School is a leader in cultural empathy education through their multilingual curriculum, bridging students, families and faculties from different backgrounds to create a holistic learning environment.

Any successful outcomes will be used to offer hope during the Rohingya crisis.
